Accounting apprentice

To get into accounting, you usually need a qualification just to get in the door. Here, you can start from nothing, get qualifications, get real work experience, and build your way from the ground up. It’s an entry way to the career I wanted, and a unique opportunity that’s completely different from what you’d find at an accountancy firm.

I still remember the first time I came for my interview; it felt quite nerve-wracking to start with. You’re entering quite a secure site and that might be different from what you’re used to. But actually, the people here are lovely: the apprenticeship managers came to meet us all and put us at ease. They explained what would happen on the day, what each role is, what FCDO Services’ objectives are. You relax really quickly.

That feeling has definitely carried on into my apprenticeship. I really love the team I’m in. There’s a lot of work to do together, but we all get on well; we can have a good laugh together. It’s actually a very close-knit community, even outside my immediate colleagues. There are other teams across the Accounting function, but we all feel like part of one group.

I actually sit next to someone who’s just done her AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) Level 4. So, when I need anything explained, she’s really helpful. If I’m looking at purchase orders and there’s something I’m stuck with, I know I can just ask.

I’m very excited about everything I’m learning here. You move through quite a lot of placements to get an overall view of the finances of FCDO Services, and it gives you a better understanding of where you want to be, what you want to do. I’m moving on soon into an area that’s more traditional accounting, looking at ledgers and that sort of thing, and I’m really looking forward to seeing that new side of the team.
