Associate Project Manager (IT) Apprentice

“Before joining FCDO Services, I worked as a Service Desk Analyst. When considering an apprenticeship, I knew I was looking for a programme that had a clear progression path into a career.

I was initially uncertain of apprenticeships because I thought that apprentices might not be trusted to take on real responsibility, which I really wanted. But when it comes to programmes here, that’s far from the case.

I was looking into roles within the Civil Service and that’s when I came across FCDO Services. I really liked that the work was varied, global and the qualifications were most professionally appealing. I’ve always been interested in Project Management – especially within IT so that’s what drew to me to this programme.

"I’ve loved the interaction with all levels of the business, working with colleagues in such varied roles has exposed me to different techniques, skills and ways of thinking."

So far, I’ve been shadowing senior members of staff through the project lifecycle, chairing meetings, creating project artefacts, and attending apprenticeship workshops. I’ve learnt so much already – like stakeholder management, efficient time management, how to create schedules and project plans and efficient note taking, which is really important for any project. I’ve loved the interaction with all levels of the business, working with colleagues in such varied roles has exposed me to different techniques, skills and ways of thinking.

As part of a particular project, it was my responsibility to arrange a discovery period with multiple people across the business. The objective was to understand the current service provided, how we could improve on it and take over the service from a third party. So, you’re exposed to lots of different parts of the project lifecycle, and the team are really good at getting you involved in a variety of work to build up your experience and confidence. I’m now looking forward to managing a project independently.

“You’ll be helping make the world a better place.”

I’d highly recommend an apprenticeship with FCDO Services. I’ve really valued the diverse and inclusive work environment and found that everyone is so down-to-earth and helpful. Working in the Civil Service also gives you great career and progression prospects.”
