“Our people have a strong feeling for history. They want as much as possible of the diplomatic story in the files to be available to researchers, the media and the general public. Of course some really sensitive comments have to be held back – but this really amounts to very little. For the paper files, the Reviewer’s judgement is key. On the Digital side, we can now use technology to aid us in applying those judgements, with artificial intelligence now able to support us more and more in doing that.

If there’s a more effective way of doing things, we adopt that. We’re improving the way we work as we go, without being set in our ways.

We have a strong sense of service to the public too. We’re handing over what were previously protected government documents, so that the public can see how decisions were made and policy formed. This is important, and it feels good to be doing it.
